    Via Ferrata Dolomites

    Full Description

A Via Ferrata (Italian for "iron route", plural Vie Ferrate) is a protected climbing route found in the Alps and certain other locations. The essence of a modern Via Ferrata is a steel cable which runs along the route and is periodically (every 3 to 10 metres) fixed to the rock. The origins of Via Ferrata date back to the nineteenth century, but Via Ferrata are strongly associated with the First World War, when several were built in the Dolomites mountain region of Italy to aid the movement of troops.

Via Ferrata can vary in length from short routes taking less than an hour, to long, demanding alpine routes covering significant distance and altitude (1,000 metres or more of ascent taking eight or more hours to complete). In the Dolomites, it is possible to link several Via Ferrata together, staying overnight in mountain refuges, and so undertake extensive multi-day climbing tours at high altitude.

We are based in Ponte di Legno (1 hour drive from Madonna di Campiglio in the Brenta Dolomites) so if you book just one day, we will choose a Via Ferrata in the Brenta Dolomites. If you book more than one day, we are happy to travel to other areas in the Dolomites.

In Ponte di Legno we have a cosy b&b in the centre of town and you you can stay with us while experiencing the various Via Ferrata of this region like Sentiero dei Fiori and Corno di Grevo. We will be happy to create a tailor made Via Ferrata trip for you.

    Example Itinerary

It is for you and your guide to decide the exact makeup of your booking however, these itinerary days shown below are an example of how a booking for this activity could be structured.

Easy Via Ferrata Brenta Dolomites - Vidi

From Passo Campo Carlo Magno, near Madonna di Campiglio, we take the gondola to Passo Grostè. After following an easy trail, we start the Via Ferrata Vidi. At the end of the Via Ferrata, a trail leads to a nice hut, Rifugio Graffer, where we can have a drink or lunch. From here we continue downhill for 20 minutes to the gondola station. This is considered an easy level via ferrata. 4 hours hiking, 300 metres elevation gain and loss

Moderate Via Ferrata Brenta Dolomites - Benini

From Passo Campo Carlo Magno, near Madonna di Campiglio, we take the gondola to Passo Grostè. After following an easy trail, we start the Via Ferrata Benini that eventually leads us to the cosy Rifugio Tuckett. If this is a day trip, we will hike back to the gondola at Passo Grostè which takes 1,5 hours. This is considered an easy/moderate level via ferrata. 7 hours hiking, 700 metres elevation gain and loss

Easy Via Ferrata Central Dolomites - Gran Cir

There is a good reason why this route is on the top of the list: it's one of the easiest in the Dolomites. Starting at Passo Gardena, one of the most photogenic mountain passes in the Dolomites, the route will take you to the top of the Gran Cir mountain where you can check out the beautiful views of the nearby Sella mountain group and Sassolungo. This is considered an easy level via ferrata. 3 hours hiking, 450 metres elevation gain and loss

Moderate Via Ferrata Central Dolomites - Oskar Schuster

Via ferrata Oskar Schuster takes you through the heart of Sassolungo and Sassopiato, two prominent peaks you can photograph from Alpi di Siusi - one of the most iconic photography spots in the Dolomites. This is a really fun and exciting route. The views along the way adorned with copious spires that are typical for this entire range, very dramatic indeed. This is considered an moderate level via ferrata. 4/5 hours hiking, 700 metres elevation gain and loss

Difficult Via Ferrata Central Dolomites - Mesules

Currently 109 years old (as of 2020), Via Ferrata Mesules is one of the oldest in the Dolomites, predating World War I. The route runs up the western face of the Sella Group and takes you to the little summit of Piz Selva from where the view over the moon like landscape of the Sella massif stretches for kilometres ahead. There is some significant exposure along some of the ferrata section, including a narrow gully. A rush of adrenaline is guaranteed! This is considered a difficult level via ferrata. 7/8 hours hiking, 800 metres elevation gain and loss
