Full Description
Ice climbing is a magical Winter activity that involves ascending frozen water falls. To do this we use mountaineering equipment called ice tools such as ice axes and crampons. To enjoy ice climbing you don't have to be a mountaineer but you do need to enjoy climbing in general, being outdoors in the snow and love the cold. Each day we will build your confidence with exposure and team work combined with the technical ability with the ice and the tools.
Mountain Guides Italy is specialised in organising custom made ice climbing courses for individuals or small groups. We do not have pre-set dates for our courses because we work around the needs and technical level of our clients. The area where we are based is a magic place to ice climb wth over 20 ice falls. We will carefully choose the perfect location according to the ice conditions, the weather forecast and your level. Stay with us in Ponte di Legno in our cosy guest house.
We also organise tailor made trips in other locations all over the Alps.
Example Itinerary
It is for you and your guide to decide the exact makeup of your booking however, these itinerary days shown below are an example of how a booking for this activity could be structured.
Arrival day |
Transfer from your arrival airport to our b&b in Ponte di Legno. |
Day 1 : Getting to know you and avalanche awareness |
Our daily routine starts with 8.00 breakfast and we will be ready to leave the house at 8.45. A 10 minute walk gets us to the lift station in Ponte di Legno. We will catch a chair lift to the beautifull Valbione hut. After an espresso, a 1 hour hike gets us to the ice falls. On the way, we will stop for an introduction to avalanche awareness. We will then set up a top rope on an ice fall and focus on ice climbing technique and how to use the ice tools (ice axes and crampons). We will start at an easy angle and gradually get steeper. At 3pm we need to head back to catch the chair lift back to town. |
Day 2 : Improving your technique |
Depending on our progress on day one, we will choose if to continue to improve your technical level on top rope, or to try an easy 2 pitch route. You may even want to try leading on easy ice. |
Day 3 : Multi-pitch or leading |
Depending on your motivation and on your ability, together we will select some ice climbs that are ideal for you. |
Departure day |
Transfer from our b&b in Ponte di Legno to your departure airport or to another location. |
