Full Description
Passo Tonale is the ideal place to learn the basics of Ski Touring (also know as Ski Mountaineering or Ski Randonnée). Lots of easy off-piste slopes to learn how to ski in powder snow, many valleys and summits to discover and the Adamello Glacier, the largest in the Italian Alps. This fascinating activity is ideal for confident piste skiers who love the natural beauty of the mountains: open spaces, calm and tranquillity, no crowds. For people who like to ski downhill but also find satisfaction in reaching a summit or a mountain pass after 2 hours of skinning uphill… and then enjoying two of the most famous off-piste itineraries in the Alps: Pisgana and Pisganino. Over 12km descent, from 3200 metres above sea level all the way to the village of Ponte di Legno.
Example Itinerary
It is for you and your guide to decide the exact makeup of your booking however, these itinerary days shown below are an example of how a booking for this activity could be structured.
Day 1 : Off piste skiing and basic avalanche awareness training |
We suggest that you arrive a few days before the start of the course to get your ski legs back! Today we will start with some skiing on the piste, to get to know you and see how you ski. Then we will continue with some easy off-piste, teaching you the right technique according to the type of snow conditions. During one of the off-piste runs, we will stop and start with some basic avalanche awareness training. |
Day 2 : Off-piste skiing technique and how to use skins |
We shall choose some new off-piste itineraries still using the lift system, still working on your off-piste technique. During the day we will teach you how to use your skins and how to climb up hill. |
Day 3 : Ski tour day: Pisganino glacier |
It is only your third day but we are all ready going for a full day ski tour! We take the lifts up to 3000 metres above sea level and start our trip by skiing downhill with a great view of the Adamello Glacier. After a great descent, it's time to put our skins on a climb 400 metres (about 2 hours) to the Passo Pisgana. From here, we descend for 10km on the Pisganino itinerary, 1800 metres descent. |
Day 4 : Off-piste skiing technique, intermediate avalanche rescue training and orientation skills |
Today we will be fine tuning your off-piste technique and introducing the next step in avalanche safety. We will also familiarise with some orientation skills that are always useful in the case of bad weather. |
Day 5 : Glacier ski tour day: Pisgana glacier |
Last day of the course, but what a day! The first part of the day until Passo Pisgana are similar to day 3. From here we will continue to climb for another 200 metres to another pass that allows us to access another valley. From here we will ski on the magnificent Pisgana, 12 km and 2000 metres descent. |

A great introduction to ski touring
"On behalf of Susie, Juliet and myself can I thank you for an excellent two days. It was a great introduction to ski touring for Susie and I know she is converted. It was also a great introduction to the joys of the Italian alps and I know we will be back."
